Christmas Hampers for the Elderly

As part of PSHCE the students and staff collected food items so that they could make up Christmas Hampers for ‘Age UK’ based on Mount Rd , Gorton. We do this every year and a select group of students are chosen to go and deliver the hampers.

Mr Gleeson, Mr Morgan, Mr Beddows and Miss O’Brien took 13 students to the day centre. Whilst there, they sang lots of Christmas carols and got to meet the older ladies and gentlemen from the community who were absolutely over the moon by the generous donation and the performance of the students. The students thoroughly enjoyed the whole visit too and we look forward to doing the same again next year!

Merry Christmas from the PHSCE Choir!

KS4 Students create Care Boxes for the Homeless

The Key stage 4 group 4C at Melland High School have been working with the Leonard Cheshire organisation towards a City and Guilds certification in Building Communities.

The Leonard Cheshire coordinator Sandra has been coming into school and leading sessions covering a range of activities, which focus on getting active and healthy; developing confidence and learning new skills.

On Wednesday the 4th December, the group took part in a nationwide project “ Care and Share”. This involved groups of young people across the United Kingdom preparing and delivering care packages to homeless shelters across the country.

The pupils and Leonard Cheshire teamed up with Manchester United player Marcus Rashford’s “In the Box” project helping the homeless in Manchester. Each pupil prepared a care box with essential items to help combat the winter conditions and wrote messages of good will to include in the parcels.

This project was so exciting that the ITV network sent their reporter Rachel from Granada Reports to cover the event. The 4C group were amazing throughout – following instructions, asking thoughtful and reflective questions and really connecting to the project. As well as developing a real understanding of the community and the importance of helping others, the pupils worked on their key skills of teamwork, communication and gaining confidence whilst having a great time. A fantastic morning and many thanks to all involved. Hope you all caught us on Granada Reports!

Melland FIFA 20 Tournament

FIFA 20 Tournament

Over the past 3 months students at Melland High School have been competing in a FIFA 20 tournament on the PS4. The format was similar to the world cup with player being drawn into groups and needing to come 1st or 2nd in their respective group to advance.

Then it was down to the knockout stages, last 16, quarter final, semi-final and then final. Over the course of the competition 65 matches were played and over 230 goals scored.

It wasn’t always clear who would get through to the final but in the end it came down to two sixth form students, Azman and Baazi. The friends had a very competitive match and the final result was 3-1 to Azman.

A huge thank you to all the staff that went out of their way to support the tournament, especially Mr Morgan and Mr Saddoo for letting us use the multimedia studio and the lunchtime organisers for being so flexible.

6th form students explore the world of work

Pure innovations in conjunction with The Careers and Enterprise company have supported organising a number of work related learning trips for different groups of 6thform students.

Transport for Greater Manchester welcomed 8 of our students to its head office. Here they provided a tour of the printing room, warehouse and offices, described a typical working day and set up a number of activities including using specialist computers and printers to label bus stops.

The staff were welcoming and engaging and the students thoroughly enjoyed the day. We even bumped into an ex pupil who is now working in the office for TFGM!

A group of students will be going to the Rowlinsons Knitwear Factory at the end of November and Australasia in January.

Many thanks to Pure Innovations for organising these discovery days.

Interviews For New Student Leaders

Michelle Bennett from Cedar Mount joined Dean Beddows, Julie Barnett and the Melland Student Leaders in interviewing 11 prospective candidates to become our new student leaders.

The candidates were selected from over 20 applicants who filled in an expression of interest application and they all interviewed with confidence.

Thanks to all the Melland tutors who prepared them so well for their interviews, they certainly did you proud. After much discussion and debate amongst the Student Leaders, three candidates were selected and will join the team for their next meeting. They are Saracen, Lily and Kias.

As a result of this collaboration between Melland and Cedar Mount Student Leaders we are making plans for new and exciting future joint projects. Also a big thanks to Ann Dimelow Head of Catering at GEV for updating the Student Leader team on the new recycling plans to be implemented.

Manchester Sumdog Competition

Seven classes from Melland High School participated in the Greater Manchester Sumdog competition where students faced other schools online answering as many maths questions as possible.

The competition took place over five school days, involved 33 classes and 598 students across Manchester who managed to correctly answer 127, 752 questions between them!

All students played brilliantly during lessons, breaks and at home which saw 16 Melland students in the top 100 and 3E and 4D winning the daily prize on two separate occasions.

Special mention goes to the whole of 3E for finishing second in the competition and particularly Kais Smith who finished 7th out of 598 students who competed in Manchester. Well done Kais!

MHS 6th Form Cinema Visit

On Tuesday morning 6th form students had the opportunity to visit our local cinema, the Showcase Cinema in Belle Vue. This was part of the IntoFilm Festival which is the largest youth-focused film festival in the world! After six successful years, the Into Film Festival offered a variety of film opportunities.

We opted for Wonder Park as the festival offered an assortment of resources that promoted literacy, numeracy and PSHE. As well as being inclusive to SEN and autism-friendly, the IntoFilm Festival had something to offer everyone. A mix of abilities travelled to the cinema and had a fantastic experience. For some it was the first time they had experienced going to the cinema and were very excited at the opportunity. This is the second year we have participated in the IntoFilm festival and have also accessed the film club through the same organisation. Students have not only learnt how to appreciate film by looking at film language and how the story is told but also to review and share with others.

Renee “It was a really good experience and great to go to the cinema with my friends”

Corey “The film was really good, I hope we can do it again”

Well done to Irfan for leading the team as captain,  I’m sure you all join me in being extremely proud of them all and look forward to seeing them perform to such a high standard again soon.
