BFET SEND New Starter Day

A special mention and thanks to Maree Jordan, Julie Barnett, George Thomas and Adam Rumble from our very own BFET Educational Psychology and Specialist Outreach (EPSO) Team who successfully facilitated the BFET SEND New Starter Day this week. The team led by Sue Warner from Melland ran a series of informative workshops including:

An Introduction to SEND, Supporting Students with Language & Literacy Difficulties, Autism Awareness and Attachment; the day also included an ‘Inspirational’ tour of the Melland learning environments and classrooms.

A big thank you to the BFET Principals who managed to release 20 staff from across the BFET and to the staff who attended for their positive engagement and participation, their contributions were much appreciated and their support in sharing the good practice from across the Trust was much appreciated by the team. The day was really well received and feedback included ideas to make the day even better next year as well as overwhelmingly positive comments and suggestions following the training of what participants will do differently or take away and try out in their own academies.

“Consideration of EAL Learners was particularly useful” I enjoyed the group discussions and sharing everyone’s strategies” “I enjoyed the open and relaxed atmosphere” “I feel more confident in identifying and meeting the needs of my learners with SEND and have lots more strategies use back in my classroom”.

New Learning Environment

Pupils enthusiastically explore their new learning environment at Melland!

An exciting start to the year has seen a newly adapted complex needs department unveiled to pupils at Melland High School. We have expanded personalised pathways for complex learners to include: three teaching groups and a fully adapted learning environment.

Learners have already begun to explore the expanded learning space and are benefiting from the newly resourced specialist equipment and tailored curriculum. Complex learners are supported to encounter, explore and gain skills in areas all of communication, sensory regulation and emotional understanding. Alongside the consistent promotion of independence. The specialised equipment is key to facilitating positive interactions and promote a range of personalised learning opportunities. Pupils are learning about art, drama, music and physical wellbeing alongside social learning and personal development as well as improving their literacy and numeracy/problem solving skills.

The new space has been really well received by all pupils who now have access to a wider range of learning opportunities and regulatory support. Pupils are also empowered to make their own choices and are inspired to communicate their needs and feelings through personalised engagement.

LG4 Cafe is a Huge Success!!

Last week Learner Group 4 ran a MacMillan coffee morning as a launch for their weekly cafe.

It was amazing to see some of the older students demonstrating skills that they had remembered from last years cafe, they showed both independence and leadership skills by helping other students that have just move into sixth form.

The cafe was a huge success! There were cakes, biscuits and bread galore and we managed to raise £83.75 for a wonderful cause. Well done to everyone involved and we look forward to many more cafes to come.

Melland Goes Global

As part of Citizenship lessons this year Melland students will take part in a programme run by The Global Scholars network. Throughout the Global Scholars programme, students will be able to communicate directly in e-classrooms with other students across the globe. Multimedia projects invite Global Scholars to explore connections between each year’s global topic and their own cities. Students advance in digital literacy, language communication, and other key learning outcomes while showing us the world through their eyes.

The Melland students will be investigating “Nature in Our Cities” They will learn about different topics and share their results with their peers across the globe. This will also give them the opportunity to see how nature flourishes in our city and in other cities throughout the world. At the start of the programme they will make a video introducing themselves, their school and where they live. The project will culminate in them carrying out a ‘Community Project’ of their choice relating to nature in our city.

The Global Scholars programme covers 25 countries and 51 cities, including 13 cities in the U.S. and 38 vibrant international cities.

Students Join the Protest for Climate Change

Friday 20th September a group of our sixth formers took to the streets in protest, joining millions of students all over the world to be part of ‘climate strike day’ in what will go down as a historic day of action in support of the climate change agenda.

Armed with homemade placards, loud voices and determination, our students marched through Manchester to join thousands of others gathered in St Peters Square to make their voices heard.

The Sixth Formers represented Melland fantastically throughout the morning and took the crowds and noise in their stride as well as making some noise themselves. Not only did they impress us but they also made their mark on the protest by attracting attention from the local media and giving an interview to the BBC. Special mention to Marshall Collins who spoke to the camera with such enthusiasm and confidence about the issues that young people face. Watch this space for the interview piece!

New School Year is Well Underway

A huge welcome back to all our staff and students. We hope everyone is well rested and ready for another exciting year ahead. We have returned to some great changes to the layout of different zones. The Media Studio has made its way up to the next floor and our LZ4 has much more learning space and equipment. It will open up more opportunities to be creative and support with teaching and learning. It is great to see all our new year 7 students making the very smooth transition into Melland and we wish them the best of luck. Head of Key Stage 3 Mrs Milburn had this to say;

“A wonderful first week for our new starters in KS3. They have all arrived looking smart in their new uniforms and settling in well to tutor groups and classes. A big thank you to our Y8 and Y9s who are doing a sterling job of welcoming and helping the new pupils to make friends and find their way around the school. A great start to the year!”

Key stage 4 students have an exciting year ahead and Mr Barlow would like to mention; “Key stage 4 students have settled in to their new tutor groups very well and are already impressing staff with their hard work and maturity. Lauren , Sonny and Kevin are just a few students who we’d like to give a special mention”.

We have had some very excited pupils moving from Key stage 4 into 6^thform and are preparing for some exciting accreditations and preparations to the next stage of their education. Head of Key stage 5 Miss Hammond is extremely happy with the new start;

“A huge welcome to our new year 12’s this September and big thank you to our year 13 and 14 students for being supportive and welcoming. Everyone has relaxed and refreshed over the summer break and is now ready to get stuck into the new exciting curriculum, employability opportunities and community projects in 6^th form. We already have a café up and running, a fundraiser morning on its way and a trip organised with Into Film. We are all looking forward to the exciting year ahead”.

We would also like to offer a very warm welcome to Mr Ashley, Miss Corey and Miss Burns our new teachers as well as the return of Miss Brooksbank who have been offering very creative and exciting lessons .

LG4 Cafe Reopens

LG4 will be relaunching their café on WEDNESDAY mornings this term, it will then run every Wednesday from 10.45am to 11.30am.

This Wednesday 18th september will be a Macmillan coffee morning, we will be serving lots and lots of yummy cakes and biscuits as well as our usual toast, cheese on toast, crumpets etc. All money raised will be donated to the Macmillan charity.

If anyone would like to donate any cakes or biscuits that would be wonderful, you can drop them off in sixth form.

Students Overcome Fears With NCS Challenge

During the summer, two of our sixth form pupils participated in the NCS Challenge. Luke and Marshall spent 4 weeks involved in a variety of activities designed to develop their independence and confidence and achieve more than they ever imagined. During phase one our young people had to spend a week away from home accessing outdoor pursuits working in teams and accessing activities such as archery and rock climbing.

In the second phase Luke and Marshall had the opportunity to stay in halls of residence where they would develop their life and living skills. This was followed by a two week community partnership in the community. Marshall, who has just started sixth form helped in Harperhey Community Garden. He had to help keep the garden and work with residents to ensure all plant life was cared for. Marshall overcome his fear of public speaking in a Dragon’s Den Style pitch to win £25 towards his community project and with sponsor input managed to raise around £300. Luke attended Mellor Mill in Marple which is an archaeological trust where he helped with the cleaning and weeding.

Marshall and Luke made lots of new friends on the project and developed their independence and confidence in a big way. They have started this school year incredible well with a new found maturity and awareness of the world around them. Luke was very encouraging about the scheme and said “NCS Challenge was inspirational and think others at our school would love it!”

They were both very excited last week as they celebrated their triumphs with a reward ceremony at the Palace Theatre where they received certificates for their triumphant completion of the course.
