Barbican Box Performance at Home
Back to article list

6th September 2018

Through the Barbican Box project Melland High Drama Group have had the opportunity to work with professional actors and the technical wizards at Home Theatre Manchester.  Barbican box is an innovative project promoting engagement with the arts and Melland High School were fortunate to be one of only 5 schools selected in Manchester.  Actor Lisa Marie Hoctor from Mighty Heart Theatre Company worked with students to devise a play based on their own research in Gorton called ‘The Bees of the Bang’; a symbolic tale of personal growth and community harmony.

All the students enjoyed the workshops and the professional experience of rehearsal and technical input during the day at HOME.  It was a truly inspiring opportunity which reinforced pathways for our students to have a voice and engage creatively with their community.

‘With Lisa coming in, it’s definitely helped us a lot.  It helps us express a lot more ideas, we’re more alive.

It’s a fantastic opportunity when you get artists in and they teach you different techniques and skills’

The project was achieved with support of all Melland staff but special mention must be made to Angela Dean for  persistent support & encouragement and Paul Morgan for technical input.
