Melland and Cedar Mount Students Provide Heels 4 Hearts

Students and staff from Melland High School and Cedar Mount Academy have taken part in Good Morning Britain’s ‘Heels 4 Hearts’ campaign, as part of a national effort to improve awareness of cardiovascular health. ‘Heels 4 Hearts’, supported by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), aims to provide every secondary school in the UK with CPR kits so that young people can learn life-saving skills.

Students from each academy appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, with Dr Hilary Jones visiting Gorton Educational Village to close the programme’s week-long drive for shoe donations. Between the two academies, over 300 pairs of shoes were donated to the campaign.

Alongside Ardwick and Hulme, Gorton has one of the highest mortality rates for circulatory disease in Greater Manchester, and TV’s Dr Hilary, alongside the North West Ambulance Service, was on-hand to teach staff and students how to perform CPR effectively.

The academies have now made a commitment to train up each student in September’s intake over the next five years, utilising training equipment provided by BHF as a result of ‘Heels 4 Hearts’.

Dame Dana Ross-Wawrzynski, CEO of the Bright Futures Educational Trust, said: “Britain has one of the lowest survival rates for cardiac arrest in Western Europe and it is extremely important that our staff and students have access to this life-saving knowledge.

“As a Trust, we are committed to providing a diverse education, and this was a fantastic opportunity for both academies to expand their students’ awareness of wellbeing. Hopefully our students aren’t ever placed in a position where they need to perform CPR, however, we are extremely pleased to see them taking such a proactive interest.”
